LIKE NORMAL PEOPLE DVD (1979)

(To purchase a DVD of "Like Normal People," follow the simple instructions on the home page here.)

One of the most famous television movies of all time, "Like Normal People" premiered on April 13th, 1979 and immediately won raves. It was a very daring tale - two mentally-challenged people fall in love and want to get married, despite almost everyone against the idea.

Roger Meyers (Shawn Cassidy) runs into all sorts of bad behavior growing up retarded. He gets picked on as a kid (in one especially harrowing sequence, we see young Roger abused by bullies in a flashback) and he even gets accused of writing a girl a pornographic letter, despite no evidence supporting the police's claims. He finally meets Virginia (Linda Purl) in a home for the retarded, and they fall in love. It is then where they discover that them falling in love will not be easy for everyone around them.

Shawn Cassidy and Linda Purl both put everything they have into their performances. Playing these roles had to have been difficult for these actors, especially for Shawn, who was more use to making teenage girls swoon with his music career. Him taking this particular role was especially daring - perhaps it was to prove he had more talent then just good looks on stage.

"Like Normal People" will probably never get an official release for one main reason: the word "retarded" is all over the place in this movie, and in today's politically-correct times, that simply doesn't fly. "Retarded" has been replaced by "mentally-challenged" and may offend many people. This is a shame, because "Like Normal People" is an encouraging tale of facing tall odds against you and fighting for what you believe in.

"Like Normal People" is a TV-movie of very high quality, and has earned a cult following over the years and is highly sought after.
